Welcome to part 2 of our round-up of questions that people have about Full Fibre, broadband and Wi-Fi networks. You can find part 1, here.
Broadband vs. Wi-Fi vs. Fibre vs. 5G: What’s best for you?
Choosing the right internet connection can be confusing. Broadband, Wi-Fi, fibre, and 5G all sound similar, but they serve different purposes. Let’s break it down so you can make an informed decision.
Broadband vs. Wi-Fi: What’s the Difference?
Broadband is the high-speed internet connection that comes into your home via a wired connection (like fibre or ADSL). Wi-Fi, on the other hand, is the wireless network that allows your devices to connect to the internet inside your home.
Think of broadband as the water supply coming into your home, and Wi-Fi as the taps that distribute it to different rooms. Without broadband, there’s no internet. Without Wi-Fi, you’d need to use an ethernet cable to connect each device to the internet.
So, which is better? Neither! They work together. Broadband brings the internet in; Wi-Fi lets you use it wirelessly. If your Wi-Fi is slow, it might not be broadband’s fault—it could be weak Wi-Fi coverage in your home.
Is broadband and Wi-Fi the same thing?
No! This is a common misconception. Broadband is your internet connection; Wi-Fi is how you access it wirelessly. If your internet is slow, it could be due to your broadband provider or your Wi-Fi set–up. Try using a wired connection to test your broadband speed, you can do this online by running a speed test.
Broadband vs. Fibre: Which is better?
Fibre broadband is a type of broadband that uses fibre optic cables instead of copper phone lines. It’s faster, more reliable, and better for streaming, gaming, and working from home. Standard broadband (ADSL) is much slower and often struggles with multiple devices.
If fibre is available in your area, it is 100% the best choice!
Broadband vs. 5G: Which is right for you?
5G is the latest generation of mobile internet. It’s fast but only available in some areas. But can you rely on 5G instead of broadband?
For most homes, fixed line broadband (especially fibre) is the best choice! The rollout of 5G is still too patchy across the UK to be considered a viable option for most.
Full Fibre vs. Broadband: What’s the difference?
Full Fibre (also known as FTTP – Fibre-to-the-Premises) is the fastest and most reliable broadband available. Unlike standard broadband or part-fibre (FTTC – Fibre to the Cabinet), Full Fibre delivers the internet directly to your home without using older copper cables.
If you can get Full Fibre, it’s almost always worth choosing—it provides better speeds, lower latency, and future-proof connectivity.
How to find the best broadband and phone deals
- Google – Search Google for broadband and phone packages or broadband and VoIP packages.
- Check out provider reviews– Check the reviews of various providers using sites like Trustpilot and Google reviews.
- Check contract length – Some deals lock you in for 12, 18, or 24 months, so make sure you’re happy with the terms.
- Consider speed and usage – If you stream, game, or work from home, a faster package might be worth it.
- Watch for hidden costs – Check for installation fees, fair usage policies and bear in mind that some providers increase your price during the contract term (Not us!).
How to find the best broadband and landline deals
Some broadband deals include a landline, while others don’t. If you still need a home phone, look for providers that offer packages including inclusive evening and weekend calls and mobile calls.
How to find the best broadband for your area
Not all broadband options are available everywhere. Here’s how to find the best one for your location:
- Use a postcode checker – Ask Google for providers in your town or near you. Use the providers postcode checker to find your home.
- Watch for hidden costs – Ask neighbours or check forums to see which providers offer the most reliable service in your area.
Choosing the best internet service depends on your needs. Fibre broadband is the best option for most people, if it’s available. Broadband and Wi-Fi aren’t the same, and getting the best deal means comparing providers carefully.
If your questions have been answered and you’re ready to sign up, drop your postcode into our availability checker and see if we’re available in your area.
