Data Privacy Day

Why protecting your data matters more than ever!

28th January 2025

On January 28, 1981, the first binding international data protection treaty was signed. Fast forward to today, and this date has evolved into Data Privacy Day. This is a global initiative dedicated to raising awareness about protecting personal data.

But why should you care?

Every second, our digital footprint grows. As of 2023, 4.9 billion people are using the internet globally. With every click, we leave behind more information than we realize. This data is stored, shared, and used—often without our knowledge or consent. In a world driven by data, your personal information is more valuable than ever.

The Risks You Face

Data breaches are no longer rare. In 2022 alone, over 15 million data records were exposed or stolen globally. But it’s not just large corporations that face the consequences—individuals are also vulnerable. Phishing attacks, insecure websites, or even the apps on your phone mean your data is at risk. And once it’s out there, it’s almost impossible to retrieve.

Here’s the thing: data privacy isn’t only a corporate responsibility—it’s a personal one.

Actionable Steps to Protect Your Data Today

So, how do you safeguard yourself in a connected world? Here’s a quick guide:

1. Audit Your Online Presence

It starts with awareness. Make a list of all the platforms you use—social media, email accounts, online banking. Check what data you’ve shared. Do you need all those accounts? If not, delete what you don’t use. Less exposure equals less risk.

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Enabling 2FA can reduce your chances of being hacked. It adds an extra layer of protection to accounts and makes it harder for attackers to access your information.

3. Be Wary of Public Wi-Fi

Public wi-fi is a hacker’s paradise. If you must use it, ensure you’re on a VPN (Virtual Private Network), which encrypts your connection and protects your data from prying eyes.

4. Update Your Software

Outdated software is an easy entry point for cybercriminals. Make sure your apps, operating system, and antivirus are up-to-date.

5. Read the Fine Print

No one enjoys reading privacy policies, but they exist for a reason. Before you download a new app or sign up for a service, check what data they’re collecting and why. If you’re uncomfortable with it, opt out. You have the right to control who has access to your personal information.

What Companies Can Do

It’s not only individuals who need to act! Companies play a massive role in safeguarding data. If you’re in charge of managing sensitive information, it’s your responsibility to put in place strong privacy practices:

  • Encrypt sensitive data to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Limit access to personal information on a need-to-know basis.
  • Invest in cybersecurity training for employees. Human error is the leading cause of data breaches.
  • Be transparent about how you handle and protect consumer data.

The Future of Data Privacy

The fight for data privacy is far from over. With the rise of AI, machine learning, and big data analytics, new challenges emerge. As technology advances, so too must our understanding and handling of data. Regulations like GDPR in Europe and CCPA in the U.S. are steps in the right direction, but the real power lies with us.

We must be vigilant. Protecting your personal data is no longer optional—it’s essential.

Data Privacy Day is more than a calendar event—it’s a reminder of our shared responsibility. Whether you’re an individual or an organisation, the steps you take today can have a lasting impact. You don’t have to be a cybersecurity expert to protect your data, but you do need to be proactive.

After all, in a world where data is currency, your information is your power. Don’t give it away.
