23rd June 2024

International Women in Engineering Day is a global celebration of women in engineering. It’s dedicated to their achievements and contributions and held annually on June 23rd. #INWED highlights the roles women play in various engineering disciplines, inspiring future generations and promoting gender diversity.

Grain is proud to employ women engineers in diverse roles on our UK wide roll out of Full Fibre broadband.

Today we celebrate the remarkable contributions of women in engineering within Grain. These extraordinary women are breaking barriers, defying stereotypes, and leading the charge.

Meet two of the women driving innovation at Grain. Each are making significant strides in different realms of engineering:

Samantha - Install Engineer

Samantha, Install Engineer

“I left school to become an electrician, I’d done general labouring and other trades along side it. After this, I joined EE as a mobile tech agent in the call centre which started my telecoms career. After 4 years I joined Openreach doing copper and fibre along side each other.”

“I expanded my knowledge with another fibre company pulling in cables which we know as core cables and doing business installs then I realised I wanted back into the residential installs. I tried with Grain and couldn’t believe it when I got the job offer :)”

“I get to do installs in customers properties and having that personal chat with them while I install their broadband and get them connected. I believe I’m currently the only install engineer up in the north east for Grain and I’m hoping the more people see a woman can do it then it encourages them to join and prove us women can be engineers”

“I am currently 6-7 years in the telecoms industries and love sharing any knowledge I can. Getting stuck in and getting the work done is an amazing and proud feeling and I love when female customers are shocked but really happy to see a woman come to the door and install their broadband.”

Imogen - Project Engineer for Grain

Imogen, Project Engineer

“I started my career as an engineer in London. I really enjoyed my role as an installer but I was looking for the next step to develop my skills further.”

“I relocated to the Midlands to begin my career with Grain. Since joining Grain I have really improved my knowledge of the core network and moving up from an installer to a jointer was definitely the right move for me.”

“Grain give you everything you need to approach new challenges with confidence and knowing the support is there whenever you need it really builds your belief in yourself. I would recommend a career in engineering to anyone, especially women looking to try their hand at something new. Women are becoming more and more common within the engineering team and it’s great to see! I hope more women continue to join and progress their careers.”

International Women in Engineering Day is dedicated to igniting aspirations of young girls. We hope it demonstrates that engineering is an exceptional career path. At Grain, we are committed to breaking down barriers in the engineering industry. Together, let’s empower, connect and inspire the future generation of female engineers!
